I’ve played a few courses now and been in a green side or short fairway bunker and after hitting my wedge the ball will hit the green and then come screaming backwards toward me at a crazy fast speed.

Is this a new thing or what?

If the bunker is below the green surface you will get backspin, the higher the green surface is, the more you get. But, I've had some ridiculous spin on a few greens. Also, hitting the ball too thin (i.e. late with 3 C) seems to produce the odd massive spin shot too.
