Part 1
I'll give all the videos on how I go about getting and using lidar that is available to me in my area. Please excuse my babbling in these videos, that's what happens when I drink and talk.

Hey Joe! Just tried playing with SAS and didn't get far. Got to the first screen with the world map on it, typed in my location (which it found and push pinned), went to zoom in on it and it remains at the low resolution it started at, finally going to a grey screen at x8 zoom. Importantly, there are lots of "Satellite (Google maps) HTTP 404 Not Found" messages scattered around. Tried to do Morton, MN (as in the tutorial) and had the same problem. Any ideas?

No ideas at all, I don't think I have had to mess with it once. I will check when I get home but what version do you have? I have 161616 or something like that now. I didn't have any problems with 141212 either and I believe I used that version for the tutorial.

I got 141212. Saw it was using Google Maps imagery, so I checked it on Google Maps and it zooms in just fine. I guess nothing can be easy (even starting things that are complicated ).
Thanks Joe.

Just give it some time, worrybirdie. If you zoom in and out a few times, then look at another, more popular place, then back again ... eventually, you will get most of the display in good resolution. Even if you don't, if you get enough of it, you can still follow Joe's method and the overhead looks absolutely fine.
I have done that for a few courses around Alberta, and for most of them, I could barely make out where the course was. I only got half the course one time, but by picking a larger selection, it only had to download the missing images, rather than all of them again (there was an option to "skip existing" somewhere I found). I just was going to go in to try another course, but I seem to missing SAS Planet! Now I have to go hunting....
EDIT: By the way, this was using the latest version, 160707. It's a little bit different than Joe's tutorial version, but I was able to get through it without any issue. And, I did find SAS Planet - I forgot that it doesn't install like a program - just unzip it and run it from that folder. Shortcut now made on my desktop.

Yeah it's weird I am having a problem with Google to and that doesn't happen to me, they must be having problems. Bing is good to but I still find google has the best quality.
I usually zoom to x18 - x20 for best results.

I've found in playing around this evening that Bing often shows the map when Google doesn't. Using Bing, I can find/select the course area, but then I switch back to Google satellite in the drop-down just prior to downloading. Sometimes Google isn't the best, but it seems for what I'm interested in, it usually is.
Now, I just have to get beyond downloading the overhead image ....

I'd give Bing a try, but I'm not sure its an interface option. Yeah---I couldn't get past 8x...and then it was just using the resolution of the original world map. Maybe Armand is right and I just need to be more patient (not my forte). I'll keep playing with it.
PS: Just tried Bing and patience...neither worked. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

What area/course are you looking at?

Lately I've been testing it with Norman, MN (as in the tutorial). I know that's supposed to work. Tried zooming in an out and using Bing (and others...similar result to Google satellite). Not sure what I'll try next.

Oh that's Morton, MN where one of the casino's are and they own the course. It's hit and miss right now with google and bing. Not sure what is going on but I truthfully don't use it to much and when i do it works great. I went to some other courses in MN that I have never visited and google satellite worked great if I got close enough, bings quality sucked compared to google on the one I visited.
I guess just keep trying that's all I can say.

Sorry...Morton. Tried it again this morning with the same result. Both Google Maps and Google Earth work fine all by themselves on Morton. Just within SAS are they not updating the image.
And BTW, Mike is right!

That's strange because I'm able to see it clear on both Google and Bing. What I have been doing also is using Bing to get the area I want. Once it asked to download I cancel it. Then I switched to Google and it leaves the black line to trace even though you can't see the map (beings It's all grayed out) It will still download fine.
Once again thanks a lot for these tutorials, Joe

I've just used the normal google map (not satellite) to find the area I'm interested in and then before downloading any of the images, change from Google Map to Google Satellite. Hopefully, the imagery exists (I've been fooled once or twice!).

Still not having any luck. Tried to uninstall and reinstall but...I don't see anyway to uninstall this software (very disturbing). Yes, there should be at least 3 ways to do this, but they aren't there (through an uninstall program in the directory, through an uninstall program listed under "my programs", and through Windows). Isn't this an interesting conundrum?
Posted 09 December 2016 - 01:27 PM
You don't uninstall because you never had to install it. You just ran the .exe file so if you ever want to get rid of the program you just delete the folder it came in.
This program doesn't install, it just runs from the exe
