Emulation Phase 1 complete.

Emulation1_zps10b59b8c.jpg

Assessement: Potentially successful

To do:

- Darken ground texture

- Desaturate grass

- make all tips a smidgen less bright.

- Replace 1 long grass model

It definitely looks more realistic. :)

I would say though, that it's very green compared to more brown textures of the terrain behind.

Too green, yes. Also needs to be made drier - a Heath is not a truly verdant biotope. Phase 2 launches tomorrow.

Not sure about Coos Bay, but he did an excellent version of Cypress Point and also designed Rostraver...

He also helped me along with some good constructive criticism at times ;)

I looked into that volumetric grass, gary. I rather stared at it like a kid locked out of a toy store. That would be the TW08 type of grass that axe360 brought up. It would let you lay down a proper lawn carpeting, I suppose, but also look quite uniform and boring if spread out over large spaces.

I'd say it would best be used to replace the ground texture and then sprinkle some higher grass types above for visual diversity. And I'm not sure at all I want to pay buck-bucks to get it.

Well, you did ask MJ about it, let's patiently wait for his answer.

Yep, I would look at the volumetric grass as a 'base layer' and still paint the billboard grass over the top.

I would be nice, wouldn't it :)

Good stuff...! If I'm unsure about anything.. it's the scale of it at present. Although to be fair, I can't gauge enough background to see what size the grass is, and what you are aiming for. It's still a great image though... the bottom one gives a good impression regarding the sheen off the blades..

There ya go, Ian… I was aiming for an average grass size of about a Frida K.-caboose, give or take half a cheek.

The grass elements are a bit larger than life, yes, especially the blades are fiercely too wide - but players will only rarely end up in the deep stuff and if they do, they deserve having to wade through giganto-grass. Also, with every element being sized 256x256 pixels, there are limits to how fine I can make the blades before they will vanish from view while they will get sucked in between pixels the further away from the camera they are.

In conclusion, even though not perfectly realistic in scaling, good looks and practicality trump rigorous authenticity.

Also, my self-made CF rough texture suxx and is much better at tiling than my bathroom builder. This will also be looked into.

Thanks for the scaling attention.. bigger than I was anticipating, and as you say, not to be used unless planned time with Frida develops.

As for that tiling... yup... part of the trend we're never going to fully free from. Not to worry though..

Gary, if you want to get rid of that 'popping' on the terrain, just lower pixel error number in your terrain settings to 1.

Ah… the perfect embodiment of the archetypical british links golf philosophy. You did not add bunkers yet, gary, but promise me you won't over-bunker this baby. Nor the other babies.

I don't blame him for not bunkering yet, knowing what we both do... the current style of bunkering would not do his course justice..

Thanks for the tip Mike, I was wondering how to stop it from doing that!!

As for bunkering, it's an art-form in itself isn't it...  I'm not a fan of sticking bunkers in for the sake of it, I try to make sure that they serve a purpose (either strategically or visually), but without being able to play-test the course, I guess that it will be a case of hoping that you've got it right.  There is no point even attempting bunkers with just Unity, as I know I will be tearing my hair out because you simply cant get fine enough control with the brush tools.

I'm hoping the CF will be capable of creating decent pot bunkers.

Hehe... you and me both Gary. The current style of bunkering is ok within the CF, but that's all I'll say. It does currently have limitations, to which I'm trying to stretch a little... not very well I might add !
