The LINKS fringes were done with hard extrusions of which
Unity and CF have none. It's more of a subtle bend so
I doubt it would result in a strange angled bounce, but I would expect
to see some type of soft deterrent in a random direction.

K11, that is a huge improvement in texture depth. It give the appearance of depth that we used to get in APCD by extruding and blending. I only used this technique on tee boxes as the ball would rarely land in this area and cause the rebound issues Daz mentioned. This technique would make a great tutorial for making course look even more realistic.

wow,..extrusions...remember that??? heheh,...Always looked good for the tee boxes

Very Nice HF, love the plowed fields, oh, and the rocks.
Great texture medley too.
Please tell me it's not named "5 Brothers".

Another (beautiful) links course. Looks great, highfade! Makes me a bit glad that I opted for an alpine setting, though, what with everybody and their grandmother now doing seaside courses. They all look great, btw, at least those I've seen and they do have a stunning visual variety between themselves, btw.
But what of Five Sisters, you may well not ask. So here's a brief video update about the progress up to date, feel free to observe the Raised Fringes™ in action. Or take in the sights. No mistake about the music this time, it sort of stuck after my last audio accident.

but DeNiro takes Max Cady to new heights.
Great work HF.

Sorry, don't do alpine, too high for me. Looks good K11, almost just like TGC.
I always struggle to watch stuff on Vimeo, takes longer to load and have a lot of stutter.

Thank you. Sorry about Vimeo, highfade, but YouTube is simply not on for me. I hope you were at least able to admire the high fade I played on hole 16.
Now for the rocks. New models, wouldn't do to recycle the old ones. Just the four of them should suffice. From front to back, they are

Have to start watching my tri count... There's still grass and course furniture to add as well, but this is one of the more tri-heavy bits of the course, the upper regions are a lot more barren.

Looks great K11. But what about the edges where land meets water? Is there any way to make this transition smoother? I think that's the most glaring weakness of PG graphics. Just doesn't look natural at all. You made some great stuff with that at Willow Heath.

Looks really good K.
I think the water looks good when it's moving with some grasses
and rocks along the edge. Sure, it can be made to be transparent on
the edges, with even sand moving underneath, and fish swimming along,
and frogs jumping in, and sparkles form the sun,but this is Golf and we're
supposed to stay out of the water. Of course I know we all want every inch
the course to look and feel realistic, and I think this will happen in the future,
but for now compromises must be made, and water seems to be one of them.
Great job K

I saw this transparent water edge explained on one of the Unity tutorials that were posted. Is there a reason that no one is using this method yet on courses for PG?

Acrilix, in a word - performance. Refraction and reflection take up a lot of CPU cycles.
If you want to cut the number of trees in half and have a refractive and reflective lake you can do it, it's entirely down to the designer.

Ah, Frank...
Frank, Frank, Frank.... Clearly you're relatively new in this neighbourhood. Follow the link to post 589 of this thread and read on a bit:
http://www.perfectparallel.com/topic/428-show-tell/page-30#entry11115
Long story short: I was wrestling with riparian demons ere you even knew PG existed. Yes, the shoreline situation depicted in the image above is completely unacceptable. No, I haven't done anything about it yet. Work in progress.
Reeds, grasses, rocks and shoreline crinkling will be employed. Note that at Five Sisters, although a river runs along the length of the course and infringes on 16 holes, only about 20% of shoreline are likely to come into view from the golf playing areas, the rest of them being hidden by steep banks or obscured by sufficient distance. The only way players might get to see these sore spots is while playing a bad shot - potential design insufficiencies shall be their deserved punishment.
I'll do what I can - and that isn't much. For this as for many other things I stand by my verdict from 2 videos ago: "This ain't exactly Pixar..." And I ain't John Alan Lasseter.
And no more reflection/refraction comments, please! Water reflects! And it's transparent! Who knew? Really, trust me on this guys, all of us designers happen to be fully aware of this. If it doesn't reflect and doesn't refract, then the reason for that is intent, not oversight.

I think I bunkered too much pot already on this course... Anyway, here's the same thing in 3D and on moving pictures.
Easy pin in front of the main trap - the strange bounce of the ball is my bad, I got some meshes entangled during construction, will get sorted. Note how a 127y wedge easily covers a 158y distance...
The Birdie sounds .... sound exactly like where I live - uh, thats the main thing .. thanks !!!
Little known fact when King Arthur was trying to make a golf course and he ran into some conflict. King Arthur: There's a peace only to be found on the other side of war. If that war should come I will fight it! Other important fact. Read the Book of John in the Holy Bible.

Still lots to do, but all the water works are in,
and testing shouldn't be to far away.
The Tom Doak book recommended by Mike
really helped with the strategy on this design.
