Hm... this one will be different. A bit more immature, less intellectual, more unleashed inner child. I'm just finishing the back nine and there are some rather silly downhillers in there (putt-putt accusations unavoidable...). Imagine me sitting here, chuckling and cackling at my own childishness. Not the merry, loving guffaws of a responsible old man, no, more like the gleefully twisted grins of a naughty little boy.

This one will be a bit of a romp.

For instance, this is what the 18th green will look like:

PBzIoCJ.jpg

Tee shots will be coming in from 90 degrees to the left. Your ball will

  • be okay
  • hit the wall protecting the alpine cabine brutalist clubhouse and then who knows?
  • land on the other side of that wall and end up out of bounce
  • hit the retaining wall and bounce.... somewhere
  • or quite possibly get wet.

This is one of the very few mean parts, actually, most other follies are erring on the side of scoring low.

I think I bunkered too much pot already on this course... Anyway, here's the same thing in 3D and on moving pictures.

Easy pin in front of the main trap - the strange bounce of the ball is my bad, I got some meshes entangled during construction, will get sorted. Note how a 127y wedge easily covers a 158y distance...

If pin is on back half of green and we end up on front half, can we chip on green to get to pin?

No, as CHIP is usually disabled on greens. But you can enable full shot and play a restricted swing to try and get yourself out of the poop, lol.

That is a game issue. There's nothing we can do about it in CF - the gents at PG elected to not enable chips, pitches, flops on the green. The only thing we could do about it in CF would be not to build greens like that.

But that would be horribly wrong. As wrong as it is to not enable these shot types on the greens because some hyperventilating fun-hating ultrapurists crying "Waaah, Cheat! Oh my Glob, this is cheating!" basically coerced the devs into removing this option. So yeah, I built this green this way to also showcase the glaring shortsightedness behind that decision. Well spotted!

There's another little thing I wanted to showcase with this green, btw. The current physics material "concrete", which is added as a collider to the walls, is not working perfectly. It performs well enough if an airborne ball is colliding with it, but it does nothing to stop a rolling ball, it let's it straight through.

So there always is a bit of method behind the madness. The 18th Green at Five Sisters: My little twisted laborartory of golf game horrors... Oooh, people are going to have lots of fun there, I can sense it.

From my most recent internet recon it seems it is completely legal to use any club with any stroke even while on the green so maybe it should be allowed to flop etc while on the green.

But anyway I finally got around to doing Karen for the first time. On the first hole I was still in the fairway but a giant plant was in front of me that I knew I would hit so I thought what amateur made this course this way I'm in the fairway but then:

2016_02_06_17_25_02_Perfect_Golf.jpg

what do I know the plant is not to close even when on the very edge of the fairway - great designing - relating to that .... This course has great textures though everyone knows this already but I'm just saying  - its still true exceptional blending and the plant and object colors and types really go together. Outstanding edges on the out of bounds areas and the red stakes. Many courses the stakes mean nothing except to have an object handy one may need for vampires. The water looks good too I grew up in Florida this is what water does especially when boats are moving around maybe put some boats in the water. Great object placement. Bunker textures and the boundaries of them are fantastic. Then one sees the bridges and stuff - so anyway on the 16th I thought I was going to make a hole in one which if I had I would have fallen out of the chair I had hit a 3 wood it ended up 6 feet from the hole but the ball was going right at it. Almost missed the downhill slider putt but it went in. Then on the 17th I went for the money shot was feeling frosty nailed it into the lateral hazard did some type of play as it lies no penalty thing which was welcomed. Oh the fairways are tight to tight for me but the greens make up for it because shots can be available to the player that are not to aggravating some of the spots I were in it was almost flat which was great especially when I did a mis chip and it went 12 feet passed the hole but the next shot dribbled in for a par wheew

Thanks

Thanks for your round report, JHB. One minor misunderstanding, if I may: You don't do Karen - Karen does you.

And the sisters will play with you - and you with them.

I've got a bit sidetracked, today, when I suddenly remembered something I had resolved to look into yet never took the time to deal with. What irks me most about CF is the flatness of adjoining meshes: Green, Fairway, Semi and Rough are all basically at the same level, giving transitions between and the edges of meshes a very flat look - as opposed to the staggered look of slightly different levels we all know and cherish from our real golf outings. So today, I tried something a little bit like this:

w90N48t.jpg

The edge between the tee box and the rough, in this example, now is more pronounced, more spacial-looking. Took a bit of trial and error with the CF Layers Library, fringes and additional fringe materials. But it can be done. Here's an example of a fairway turning into semi-rough.

cFra4gl.jpg

It's still a long process and the result is not yet perfect. Also, it's so minute from a players perspective that I must question if its worth the while.

Your fringe finagling is fantastic. I love it!

Looks especially appealing in the distance.

Does the ball react accordingly? I would hope so.

It is worth the while. Question answered.

...as opposed to a fake golf sim?

Anyway, I finagled some more. Had to darken the transition areas a bit to make them show at all. I made a build and went out to test this thing and - by and large - it was a bit of half a success. IF a rolling ball is slow enough as it crosses these fringes, you can actually see its path and momentum being affected by them. They do function in 3D - If the ball is rolling slowly enough, as in: just about trundling to a halt. I even had one case of the ball trying to roll off a green, but being stopped by the surrounding  fairway from rolling off. (This, however, made PG frantically caculate real time physics for 15 seconds, during which the ball rolled for 3 inches) And another one where the semi fringe blocked a rolling ball from leaving the fairway.

So, they do work at low-low ball speeds. The almost more pleasing outcome of my test run was that the entire mechanism did somehow not look too bad or out of place during a single moment over 18 holes - from a merely visceral and visual point of view it is not at all cringeworthy. To my eyes.

Officially adopted for this project.

Glad your finagling worked, and it's a brilliant idea, congrats.

If I may judge that single pic above, the transition looks

a smidgen too dark, especially the outer one. Of course

that appears to be a Unity capture looking at the distant bunker,

and probably looks much different live. I'll go back under my

waterfall now. Well done K.

You never can please everybody... Yes, some more finagling required, though it will never look perfect at all places and under all light angles. Will keep on it, though tomorrow will be the official tree and shrubs day.

The effect can be easily reproduced by any designer who THUD! , hm, I dropped too heavy a hint it seems, who cares to do so. Just add a not at all-wide fringe to your meshes, which is given a cloned, slightly darker version of the neighbouring mesh and raised by between 0.02 and 0.05 meters in the Layers Library. Blend width around 0.15, give and take.

I'm never pleased, and not sure I ever have been.

Design is like an auto wreck, ask ten people what

they saw and you'll get 10 different answers.

Like my Gramps used to say, " When you're young

they say You're Good Looking, when you're old they

say, " You're Looking Good".

The remarkable thing about this image is the information contained in the 2nd line of text in the top left hand corner...

I would like to apologise profusely to all unsuspicious golfers about all the stuff that I am going to do to them at the Five Sisters. You heard me: I'm going to do stuff to you! This one is a bit beyond fictional and might correctly be categorized as "Fantasy".

Ah well, not for me to question the path, I just follow it wherever it leads.

With my luck I would find the green with three mighty blows and then three wack from 12 feet.  Your a sick man.  lol.

Looks kinda neat.

How does a ball react if landing on the fly on the 'blend' between the two textures?

I remember a few folks trying something similar to this in Links 2003 (as that also had the same flat grass textures) and adding little lips to blends between fairway > semi, semi > rough etc. It looked good but caused serious issues when a ball landed on them on the full as the ball pinged off at all sorts of weird angles, lol.
