Photoshop...  In my 20+ years of computer play, I have never gained any interest, and haven't even had any version of it on any of my computers for at least 10 years. 

 

Is Photoshop knowledge necessary to do CourseForge, or is it used just for advanced tweaking of textures, colors, etc.?

 

 

Don't worry, you won't need Photoshop. You will get enough generic textures (with some colorisation options within CF) to manage perfectly well without it. Or without any other graphics editing software at all.

Should you be familiar or comfortable with another such software (Gimp.org), you may use that instead, no problem.

It is, as you wrote, helpful for advanced texture manipulations, but not a necessary knowledge at all.

Only a desirable one, but that's entirely your call.

Photoshop is not needed to design with CF or Unity.

Not sure about Advanced, but PS and other Free Programs

can be used to manipulate textures and make bump maps etc..

that can make a course unique. CF will come with all you need

to design an exceptional golf course.

Dry Gulch Golf Club is in beta testing, and

 I've been trying for a working windmill the

last couple of days. It's still quite wobbly,

and jerky and fast and out of sync and scale, but

I'll get it spinning right soon.

surprised the bearings aren't rusted,

but with a little breeze the sails still

creak along. Finally got the wobblies

out of it...

I was reluctant to enter the animated non-golf object armaments race, but you left me no choice. So, NoPutt, I'm calling your windmill (miss the wobblies) and raising you an...

 

 

...an airship. Not a blimp, an airship!

It's low poly as you can see from the edges where there should be roundness, and will majestically cruise over the course just once during the game.

 

 

If it looks too silly, I will remove it again. Otherwise, so help me, I will attach a sound source to it, containing the rut-tut-a-tut and whirr of strained propeller blades, the creaking of the frame and the occasional whoop-whoop of an air signal horn. Not sure if I should also attach a particle generator to it and make it shower the ground below with sparkling lights - that would probably be too much.

Karen seems to be quite annoyed by the

airships presence, but I like it. Can't wait

for the video, pictures just can't capture

the justice it deserves.

For some reason I'm picturing kittens

with parachutes.

K11 please make the airship look like a shark .... with LAZER BEAMS ... pew pew ... and a point defense system to target golf balls threatening Karen's ... um pins.

Yeah... And there goes the parabole of the airship being a symbol for Karens spirit being lifted up and gently carried away. Thanks for that, guys. Memo to myself: "Never introduce romantic symbolism into your designs, just let those philistines stare at other people's unwobbly windmills and think of boobs". Lesson learned, world!

Nice Job K11, an airship does have it's place on a golf course,

maybe not on the serene Karen, but it should not be discarded.

Sh*t happens  in Golf, Planes fly over, trains go by, car alarms go off,

and these types of ambiance or annoyance should be included. 

Golf is already too static and "Quiet Please, the genius with the club

is going to whack a ball", so no pictures and don't move.

I get what you mean, but the airship is a bit too omnipresent. It has to move and, unlike your wobbly windmill, it is not tied to a locality where you arrive and leave again quickly and it's over.

Also, it conjured up images of EA's latest thing with it's merry air balloons. The airship tasted, at least to my taste buds, a bit like those balloons - like trying just a bit too hard to be original, only to fail just because of that.

Taking it all together, this was a bit too far outside my own principles of "non multa sed multum". I will keep the contours of the airship in the splash screen of Karen, it nicely balances the image and adds a nice bit of weird whimsy.

 

But I really had to build it and fly it to be able to come to this conclusion. Couldn't have done it otherwise. Creation and destruction always go hand in hand.

You're lucky to be able to have an airship over your venue,

during the Masters all air traffic is closely monitored and 

not so much as a bumble bee is allowed near the course.

This piece being self-explanatory, I shall STFU and let you admire it in silence.

 

 

Karen needs a couple more test rounds to sniff out unexpected issues and get the ocean to look more oceanic. And a new set of better and sleeker bridges - and then will be ready for beta testing by private testers. Mac issues with the latest version of PG might cause a bit of delay.
