and chanting is actually me. The track has been edited
and altered by me. I will do what I like with my course,
and you can put that in your Peace-Pipe and smoke it.

chose to be offended by something you imagined. I imagine

Crisis in Hooterville. Oliver Wendell Douglas suspects the worst when his bored-to-death socialite wife Lisa starts to beat up a cow with a nail-studded baseball bat. And then a couple of goats. She goes on to fracture the skull of oily Mr. Haney down at the shop, serves him right, and then crashes the 45th wedding anniversary of the Ziffel couple, Fred and Doris, with the intent to sodomise their adopted son, Arnold the Pig. Furious, Oliver Wendell can think of no other resort than to out-rampage her with his rusty pitch fork and heads for the town church to open up his cadaver account. Everything ends well, though, after a slightly disturbing period of bloody excess, but with most gory scenes delicately hidden off-camera and masterfully offset by friendly banter between the two protagonist, Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor, dazzling us with a veritable firework of first-class, comedic chemistry.
This episode was never broadcast and is said to have caused the "rural purge" of 1971 enacted by CBS, when all the shows that had trees in it got cancelled, including Lassie.
Talking about Green Acres, this:
Currently dealing with the coastal situation. Yeah, Rob, me too... I introduced as special coastal rough with a hard edge and a dirt fringe to get a clear-cut transition between golf surfaces and the nearby sea.

How about some beach umbrelas, girls in bikinis and the occasional shark fin, just to scare those that may want to play their ball from the beach and harass the ladies?
(the bikini girls have remote control collars for the sharks of course ...)

Great idea! Then again: How about not? The images inside your mind are so much more powerful than anything I could add to this course. Imagination is a beautiful thing - no need to try and haul its most colourful fancies into reality, too much is lost in translation.
As my next image series about littoral design and coastal terrain transitions will show: There will be several generous strips of beach between fairways and water, some of which indeed tempting golfers to shorten a hole. But the distance and spin penalties for such an adventurous experiment should be such that it will always be a much better idea to hit the fairway. It's a rather interesting phase of work, what with me building the course so close to water and refusing to shirk the littoral issues by climbing up a cliff side with it... No idea if I can pull it off...
I'm still working on that very tricky part of the layout, so stay tuned.

Indeed it is. Splendid visual reminder, SSP. A bit silly, but well proper silly in a good way!
Okay, I'm going to go ahead and pretend that our cherished topic discipline is not circling the drain around here. Littoral stuff, very intense to do. Life is a beach? Meh...

Love that ocean color K11. Didn't you (or someone) post that CF has a custom water prefab now and you no longer use the Unity version? If so is that what is pictured above? Wish we had beautiful ocean water here on the GA coast but all the shrimp boats keep ours looking like a giant mud puddle.

We use a regular U5 Unity Pro Water as a base, Keith - which is called Water 4, ironically, despite being used for U5. Our particular water, however, has been very aptly beautified and enhanced by our very own Mr. Mike Jones and then lovingly issued to us as a very handy plug and play prefab that features row upon endless rows of incomprehensible settings. It comes with a different base colour, so I took the liberty of slightly adjusting that.
Still haven't found the right buttons for wave height, wave speed and wave direction, however - one would think it would be obvious that they would be labelled as such. But they're not. Kindly donate to the Common Sense Initiative For Endless Face Punchings of Unity Morons CSIFEFPUM. Every cent counts, those tragic buffoons need to be taught urgently how to label their stuff intelligibly, and how to prepare and distribute comprehensive documentation about their doings.

Great shots K, Simply stunning.
Something that catches my old eyes is
the brownish band between the rock face
and the rough, looks a bit sharp edged
in those pics, or is it supposed to? Love the
rippled sand texture, very realistic. Sorry, if
I awoke that inner bastard, I'll go back to
the bunkhouse now.

My course work continues, but I also decided to add a new PGA Tour Golf Challenge to my existing Golden Tee Complete. Neat thing about the PGA machine is it is all run from a PC tower, so maybe some day, PG could play on it

Something that catches my old eyes is the brownish band between the rock face
and the rough, looks a bit sharp edged in those pics, or is it supposed to?
Sorry, if I awoke that inner bastard, I'll go back to the bunkhouse now.
You have a very sharp old eye, and one accustomed to knowing glimpses of vital details. The brownish band is a dirt fringe that I have added to my coastal rough. Usually, the outermost rough layer has a soft blend of 1m to hide the 15 cm upward offset of all the meshes and create a soft transition. In this case, it's a hard blend of 0.05 with a dirty fringe, supposed to create a clear break between the rough and the remainder of the terrain - a little bit like using a spade to cut out a flower bed from the lawn. I have a matching earth terrain texture to add to the outside and also inner dirt pits with the same material. I might even raise the meshes up from 15cm to 30cm to double the height of that brown band...
I went for this approach because of the coastal nature of some of the holes where an almost immediate change from golf course to coast was required - and rather than ashamedly hiding this tricky bit as we all do in our designs (and having to move the fairways 2 to 3 meters inland as a result), I figured I would rather brazenly flaunt it at try to make it work for my design.
I tried to find out how it looked if this thin layer of rough transitioned straight to a rock texture on steep slopes and... the jury is still out on that. I need to re-examine this (and everything else) with the new and ruthless calibration brought about by a new morrow and a refreshed mind. After my first two cups of coffee, a few cigs and solving my crossword puzzle, the sudoko, the bimaru and the letters puzzle in my daily newspaper, I like to sit around for a few minutes, have a bit of relaxed me time and think about things like that. Today, I calmly ruled that I probably should remove some of the rock textures and add more dirt instead, to make the brown band a bit less obvious.
To everybody else: The "Inner Bastard" mentioned by Neal is the evil shoulder angel of designers, that lazy, inner voice telling us at various stages of our work things like "Aww, it's okay, nobody will notice" or "Yeah, that's good enough", enticing us to walk down the facile path of not dealing with some issues we ought to deal with, because some things will be noticed and are not nearly good enough. I'm pretty good at spotting the handiwork of that mischievous little critter in the works of others, all the time being fully aware that I, too, am prone to fall victim to its temptations. Sometimes it takes the well-meaning interventions of "Outer Bastards" to bring the fact to my attention that I might have some "Inner Bastard" issues.
Can you explain how you got the stripey texture for fairways,
I already described and illustrated this in post 1607, Pingmeister. Take a completely normal fairway texture, open it in Photoshop, add some slightly darker stripey bars, save the texture under a new name. Then rotate that new texture by 90 degrees and save it also: You need at least two stripey textures, depending on the orientation of the golf hole.
You could also try to create a stripey normal map and add it to the 3rd Layers Library slot, btw. But I prefer to keep that one free for an additional "terrain and growth irregularity" normal map.

I like the hard border the way you have done it.
I think that the rock texture looks a little out of place next to the brown sandy beach texture. On it's own the brown sandy texture looks great next to the sea and green rough. Perhaps the addition of rocks or boulders on the darker bits will make it look more natural?
It may be better to have the rocky outcrops all rocky without the brown bits intervening. So sandy brown edges and beaches on the curved inlets and darker rocky bits on the points.
The sea looks great although in some places you can still see straight lines that detract from the frothy effect you are trying to master.
