Cheers for that...  Point taken

Gary,

My comment wasn't aimed at your bunkers in anyway. Your bunkers look great.

I was referring to the fact that while you can create a pot bunker effect in Unity, the CF doesn't allow the bunker wall to be mapped correctly with a texture so it looks all wrong. Would just spoil any good looking course with inferior pot bunkers in there.

I've got three courses in progress now; my first course Prelude is basically finished and just needs some final touches. I've got two others happening in the meantime, one is called Mesquite Valley and it is a desert course. It is laid out and more or less ready to play but is not planted, due to a lack of suitable desert objects. I am currently attempting to gather some expertise in this area.

I thought I would share a quick screenie of each. Mesquite Valley:

And the other course is a conversion of my Links 2003 course Sapphire Lake. This is my first attempt at an APCD conversion and I would consider it to be a successful one so far.

APCD conversion of Nautilus Bay.

All hole playable and most of the planting done. Still needs some 3-d objects and clubhouse. Don't think I'll do the pano, a bit worried about framerate.

Really like the divots. Wish I knew how that was done. I have so much to learn about CF. I too wish we had more desert objects as I have an APCD conversion that is waiting to be planted. Also, I can't seem to find the pines others are using which would help greatly in planting on another course. Right now I have 5 courses layed out, but only 1 planted and that one has issues with collision meshes. Kind of hit a wall on my designs and look forward to learning more.

I am no expert in Unity and don't have CF, but I would assume the divots is just an image placed on top of the terrain in that specific spot.

Correct. Tim, I use QuickDecals. ($10 I think)  There was a free decal system for Unity 4 which is better but not supported anymore. This one can only be placed on flat surfaces.

I don't know if it's the best way but it's quite handy to do hole signage so that you don't have to do 18 3d objects.

I like it, but those water reflections in the bottom pic just kill the scene. I know there are other water prefabs available, but I think it has been said they come at an FPS cost, but I think we need to find out if the better reflective water can be optimized in anyway as the default reflection prefab seems a shame to have to put up with in such nice looking courses.

Sometimes no reflection is better than a poor reflection...

Meanwhile, back at the outdoors activities center for bored geezers, I have been watching grass grow. And helped a little bit in the process. I had mentioned a bit earlier that I did not quite like the long grass growth, so I went and changed the long grass into...

Something rumex-y. Rumex being the latin something-something for docks and sorrels. Mine comes as a low-poly bush with an explosion of ruddy colours as well as a single grass billboard:

KWuy8j0.jpg

And then I also had issues with my nondescript voluminous tree-bush, so I went ahead and changed a few bobs and bits:

v0ZJfqK.jpg

Of course, these individual specimens must be judged on their capacity to act in concert will all the other vegetal players:

vTC6eMt.jpg

So they have been judged and found not to be wanting too badly. This is all done with Photoshop for the grasses and with Photoshop and the Unity Tree Editor for the shrubs and bushes. I dread the moment when the powers that be will tell me that they don't want to use any Unity trees anymore because they have become so besotted with the cartoony clumpiness of speedtrees...

These are nowhere near the finest plants ever made. But they are mine. And considering the not-nearly-enough-good-trees issue bedevilling CF manifesting itself through ever-repeating clones we all have seen a hundred times before, my crummy little products at least have the merit of looking different. And different is good.

N2JXoVz.jpg

Vegetation being such a vital aspect of course design, I truly enjoy being able to play God with the greenery and slowly acquire the means to create the stuff that I want, looking how I intend it to - as opposed to the boring, moldy stuff from the back of the shelf on aisle 8. I find this strangely exciting and honestly would like to thank the powers that be for their extremely minimalistic tree policies so far.

To those tempted to try their hands on CF - try and integrate the Unity Tree Editor into your workflow. It's tedious as heck to get started, but it'll get a lot easier with practice.

Whilst waiting for new CF, I'm thinking "hedges"

Saddle-Up cowboys and girls, Dry Gulch Golf Club

is getting closer to the corral.

Clean them shootin' arns, and shine your spurs,

Gunsmoke is in the air, and a Bonanza of golfing

fun awaits in The Big Valley of The Wild Wild West.
