Thanks K11, hope I don't get carried away.
Those kinds of rock formations, kind of remind me of Canyon Lands in Utah. Maybe would be a way to go? Either way, there cool looking..

Thanks Axe, The mountains are gone now and being
replaced with ones that look a bit more distant and real.
The course will have a western vibe but no exact location.
Somewhere between Dodge City and Carson City.

NoPutt can you use Terrain Forge and Bing and get those shapes as a landscape...Not tried but just a thought
Posted 07 October 2015 - 06:44 PM
I love the fact you can create shapes of fairways and greens and bunkers there in the first pictures of the thread....what tools are you using to do that? Are those typical of the default textures we will see? I even notice the small edges around the shaped fairways, bunkers, and greens.
See all those outlines and shapes in this screenshot....what tools are those?

I have no idea how to use Terrain Forge, If you do try, I'd love to see the result.
JD, That last pic of yours is of Course Forge meshes and the tools are Course Forge. Those textures in the first pic look like the awesome work of K11, but to answer your question, CF will come
with some exceptional textures and at least a couple of matching plots as far as I know.

Ok awesome stuff can't wait to get the CF then.

Terrain Forge is actually pretty user-friendly..... it's still a little bit buggy and you have to do a few workarounds to get more accuracy, but it, like CF, is still a work in progress.
I actually am working on my first APCD conversion with it now; my overhead didn't quite line up exactly with the terrain but it was very close and certainly close enough to be usable. The one inconvenience is that the slopes come in like broken stair steps, so you have to do a fair amount of full smoothing (100 size + 100 opacity) before you can lay the holes out.

One of the things Terrain Forge offers is it lets you use a LIDAR scan to import in to Unity as the heightmap, with a correctly sized texture overlay of the course. You can then use Course Forge to draw out the course and lay the meshes.
Here's a pic of some brief tinkering I did with the LIDAR data of my home course here in UK. The elevation data was 1m LIDAR. Quite impressed with the accuracy of the elevations if I'm honest. I haven't altered anything in that regard, just roughly laid out the holes, overdone some tree planting and added some pylons.

Ok here is me messing with unity terrain and laying out a basic course. Not much to look at but its how I start making a course. Still a lot of work to be done from there, but its gives me an outline to go by. And of course the view went buggy again and a lost it lol. Saved scene and reloaded, but can't see it.....having issues with Unity and the view being reliable. hmm found it again....it's like it flipped it 180 or something...back to work!
Before I get to far along here what are the settings that have to be input for the terrain map to work with the game?
these? ( below, from another course someone posted ) or does it matter? I have like 2500/2500/600/513/512
width: 2324
length: 2324
height: 45
heightmap resolution: 1025
control resolution: 2048
Ok I changed the 2500's to 2324 no problems....but those other values change things a bit. I guess you need to know the basic values to start with before you get into making a terrain map....I'l have too look around.
Some hours later.......Still a lot more to mess with but fun stuff!!

Guessing I need to return to this sometime then, that's exactly where I want to be...

JD, There is no set size for the terrain, but I would
think any more than 2000 x 2000 would be excessive.
The course I'm currently designing is 1400 x 1400,
and that's leaving around 250 yds around the edge
so that the over head in game will not show the edge.
There will be videos on how to add a second terrain
and sculpt it so as not to have that end of world look
in the distance. CF also comes with a ruler which is
a God-send as Unity has none.
Check out this thread to see what a True Rookie went through.

Ok so I am looking at leaving an edge around the course of about 250 yards for the game screen?
And then reduce size of course to around 1400x1400.
Yeah the ruler would be nice to know how many yards/meters.
I just replaced some capacitors in my monitor this morning ( Screen was not coming on ) good to go now!
Still wondering about those other resolutions and height if they matter.
I'll read over that thread and learn what I can there and try again!
Looking forward to using the tools they have in the game's Designer Software.
Thanks, Jim

I suspect when you get CF and the matching terrains, textures, prefabs, and vegetation
that come with it, that you will start fresh once again. There will be
step by step videos and instruction that will reveal the entire CF/Unity
process, all set up so that you can start building your dream course.

one off the tee you can make it through.
Looking for comments on the hopefully improved

They look... mountainous. And distant. I like them a lot better this way. Together with the flattish plot they give a beautiful, open prairie feel to the place.
You've even added rubble cones below the mesas. Nice!

Yea, that's sorta where the idea came from. That
course had a place you could hit into the rocks
and the ball would come out on the green, one of
the coolest easter eggs I've ever seen.
