ditto. But the first image looks very good.

Choppe, if you haven't already, I suggest you upgrade to Unity 5, btw.

Well, I'm officially snookered. Damn these circumstances beyond anybody's control.

I would like to finalise the Black Swan, of course. If I had any say, that golf course would be out there by now. But I don't get to have a say. It's a Unity 4 creation, and what with the tectonic shift to U5 impending, it needs to be updated. And that will take some time. And help from others. At this stage it's not even certain that migrating the project up to the next floor can be done at all. It should be feasible, but as to how to go about it, I have no idea.

So, I suppose I could play some PG to pass the time. I'd love to, but for the last three weeks I wasn't able to. The game basically crashes to desktop as soon as I click on something. I have reported this issue repeatedly, but the wise leaders at PG, whose ways indeed are inscrutable, must have deemed that this was a bearable state of affairs for me to experience and have therefore carefully avoided any sign of urgency in this matter, no doubt to spare me the disenchantment of being misled into a positive frame of mind induced by unrealistic expectations and false hopes. I feel being look after so well, the gratitude almost makes my little heart burst.

So, last resort: Download U5 and start a new project. It's the only thing I can do atm. And this one will be different. The project paramaters:

  • A dry, African, tropical location with palms and savanna trees.
  • No birdie holes! A long S.O.B with narrow fairways and small greens. 5 par 4's over 470y.
  • Manicured to the max: No more grungy dirty bits, but a kitsch orgy of bright greens, vivid colours  painfully artificial and oversimplified vistas - in short: every golf tourists wet dream come true.

World, I give you: The Oasis Lodge

i1WaecK.png

The course will surround a terrain depression somewhere in the Kalahari desert, with a shallow water hole at its bottom. The vegetation will be rich and colourful around the water, but quickly dry up and become scarce towards the edges of the terrain, a few bushels of dry grass and desert dirt forming the outer boundary. And mayhap a barbed wire fence warning to look out for wild animals.

This project will take some time. U5 is a bit of a shocker for those of us who started working with U4. We do get more features, like the reflective water, but these come at the cost of more settings to juggle with. To wit, I still haven't found out why the water reflection is so poorly pixelated. Ah well... Off to designing some new 2048 textures, because this, too, is one of the rules of the new age.

Looks good K11. I love the concept. I believe that you will find the transition to Unity 5 to be less painful than you imagine. Change is a good thing when it is a change for the better. I'm looking forward to watching a course grow from the very beginning (a task I have been meaning to complete in this very thread, but have yet to get around to), and learning all of the nuances involved with that growth. Knowing your affinity for lush soundtracks (citing the aviary that is Willow Heath), can we expect lion roars and the occasional squeal of a wildebeest being taken down by said lion? I jest of course. Good luck with this new endeavor.

I moved my projects from U4 to U5 without any problems. Just make sure you make a back up. during the proccess, U5 will ask you if you made a backup before continuing. I did have to change the skybox.

K11,

Sad to hear about your issues with PG crashing but per leeeeeeeese do not give up on Black Swan as it was looking a "peerie beautie" and would hope some fine fellows would help you migrate it to U5.

I like the ideas for the next one- I had a similar thought when I dabbled with JN6 all those years ago and still have an old sketch pad with around 20 or so course layouts and ideas that I would love to attempt when I get the time and ability to do so. Most of the designs I have to say were links courses but I had a course that in fiction was set around a savannah lake with holes mostly around the lake with a few crossing over points and folds in the lake.

Keep up the good work and fingers crossed for BS ;)

p.s. I must be showing my age but whenever I see your name or specifically "K11", my mind goes back to the 70's and those compilation records from K-Tel- As seen on tv!!! :D

K11,

I'm sure PP will give you some guidance on getting Black Swan from U4 to U5. After all, have they not had to do this with their existing courses? I would hate to think they have had to recreate them all from the ground up in U5.

;)
