It's the famous garynorman flag, yes. The CF flag is just a green wireframe that you can move around to pinpoint the exact location.

Note that for the dark fog to look okay I had to increase the value of the directional light from 0.75 to 1.3. I will try to get some distance markers planted today or tomorrow.

Hm.. I always vigorously disliked Yoda. True! Started out as a Waldorf muppet pimped up for a space cowboy epic and ended up a grammatically challenged phoney sage and dispenser of painfully trite wisdoms to the 14 to 19 years old consumer bracket - who never touched a book and are unable to know better... Hmmm, Yoda big fake is, huuh... Yoda rubbish speak.

And I also enjoyed killing many Bothans for him to get any information from me...

Nr. 2 it is, then... no, not the toilet one.... Let darkness engulf and consume the Heath!

(And, of course, you'll see, since everything impacts everything in the CF/Unity-universe, that means I will have to create a new, suitable skybox with patches of heavy clouds...)

Will the course file define the weather environment (lighting, rain, fog etc), Mike, or will the game insert it?

I can only imagine it's the former as the skybox ideally would match the lighting and terrain and be supplied by the designer.

But then course files would have to be released for different weather conditions/times of day, or does CF have some way for the designer to define possible skybox/lighting/weather/.. combinations selectable via an in-game menu?

I would be curious about this, too. My inofficial guestimation would be that for now all these parameter will need to be set in Unity and will become included into the playable course file, without the game altering them at all.

Later iterations, vfe once mentionend procedural weather, with rolling clouds and impromptu rain showers etc, might evolve to include a more powerful weather system, but in the beginning (where we are, still), it will be static skies and Unity settings, I think.

With MJ stating in another thread that he would happily work on improving PG and CF twenty years from now, there is ample time ahead for the inclusion of advanced wheather features... ;)

Okay... Meanwhile, in a nearby carpentry workshop owned by old Mr. Grimsby, a set of yardage markers has been wittled into existence, soon to adorn the golf course.

Unless clearly stated otherwise on the scorecard (which it won't), yardage markers always give the distance to the center of the green. Just to avoid confusion because many golfers believe the measuring target to be the front edge of the green. No, it's the center.

Aaand, here they are, my cute little yardage markers. Aren't they cute, like tiny little soldiers waiting to march into battle.

Never mind the orange square, it's my 1 meter indicator, indicating to me how large, well, 1 meter is. Important for setting the right size for my small objects. Mmmh, they are so lovely...

yamaplant1_zps969c2596.jpg

As for the rest, it's quite simple. Crank up the CourseForge, go for the tape measure tool and start measuring out yardages. The tape measure will tell you exactly where to plant your cuuute little yama stick. Yama is baby talk for yardage marker. Yama-yama..

yamaplant2_zps82d3b4b4.jpg

And so, dear impatient community, I think you are witnessing a world first. This little yardage service, so basic and yet so essential, on which I relied so much IRL on my rounds of golf, now finally, for the first time (afaik), replicated inside a soon-to-be computer golf game. Take that, TGC!

Aah the attachments and tags of life we drag along with us... hehe..

Curious, and like the markers... although unsure about the font.. but personal tastes are precisely that.. did you make them collision proof or is the force strong with them ?

The font on my markers is my own handwriting, produced with a graphic pen on a Wacom tablet, simulating a shaky rural hand wielding a small paintbrush. Willow Heath is a small, handmade thing, not an industrialized golf outlet for the masses...

I have not added any collision yet, to anything, on account on everything being provisional, so far. Since the yamas are prefabs, that is quickly remedied once I decide they make it into primetime. But yes, they should get collidability, by all means.

Same as the bench I'm currently building. (The Font here is called Party LET). I see now there is some texture repetition in the grain of the two upper planks, gotta fix that. Yeesh, there's always something, innit?

Aha.. as I say, it's a personal thing, and that is indeed a personal touch regarding the font... good thinking!

It's certainly not a world's first! There are Links 2003 courses with yardage markers, but they definitely look very nice.  ;)

I like the circular markers you find in the middle of the fairway. ;-)

Nice bench....can imagine having to sit around and wait on it quite a bit at Willow Heath, especially if Tara and her clones are playing a 12-ball.

Okay, Dave. Fancy sitting here?

Or rather facing the other side, checking out the last green?

At any rate, my Taras would let you play through.  They're a dozen good girls, remember?

Benchiful mate... like it alot, and the light splashes upon it really well. Hope that transfers in..

Now, do you put a bin there... ball washer.. or leave it alone....lol.... I can almost see the dilemma now..

Beauty always must trump realism. Computer golfers are definitely not litterbugs - and they all possess smoothly polished, well washed balls 24/7.

There will be a few bins and ball washers, and low little tee area bordering walls perhaps, and customized tee markers, and rain shelters, perhaps even a starters hut and an old, disused leaderboard behind 18 - but all objects will be placed to enhance the atmosphere of the place (Oh did those feet in ancient times etc...), and certainly not because logic demands that they should reasonably appear where they must.

I also started itching for an Obelisk to appear somewhere - like an old war monument. But before all, in the meantime, I started hating my grass again and will probably refine it a little more.

That's a tricky line to cross.... in so many ways... but I understand what it is you mean. It's often the things in your head that trump beauty though, as there is often only so much this program allows... or that we understand it allows..  anyway, I agree, the benches look gorgeous.. the setting is perfect...

As for my end... well, nowhere near your perfected work K11... I'll add the 2nd Hole, Par 3 latest image. I'm still touching some textures up and yet to plant the low stuff. Not even sure I like the big stuff... but I'm working with what I have for now..

It's a long journey, grasshopper. I place a lot more focus on the land and vegetation than on the trappings and human objects. Let's not forget that - eventually - some dudes will swing virtual clubs on the golf course, and let out ugly beer burps whilst staring at the ball tracer. Beauty - or what we percieve it to be - is not an end in itself, more of an indulgence by the designer.  The nr. 1 priority is the land and the game played on it: The golfing has to kick ass first and foremost. And if it does, it matters little if the course looks fabulous or smells like my armpit after a long summer day.

So it all comes down to the land, not the fancy objects, benches etc. Just the land. I now yield the microphone to Mr. Gerald O'Hara from a place called, fancy that, Tara, to help me drive home my point about focussing on the land:

"Why, land is the only thing in the world worth workin' for, worth fightin' for, worth dyin' for, because it's the only thing that lasts"
