Congratulations to Kablammo11 on achieving a 100 page thread.
Fabulous work from a very talented and innovative course designer who features more than once in my Top 5 Perfect Golf course list.
It has been a wonderful, entertaining, informative and enlightening read from the start. Thanks to all the contributors and architects as well. Always interesting to come in here to see what's getting done.

Well, Ted, it's not as if I had done this all by myself.
Historically, S&T is the child of the original deal between PP and me, roughly 2 years ago. It went a bit thusly: "We give you an early CF and in return you post stuff about it in the forums" - It was never formulated in these words, rather expressed as hopeful suggestions between the lines. I may have misunderstood, actually, but I don't think I did.
And even though I blog a lot around here, S&T is hardly my property. Then again, any book publishers around here? This might make for some rather weird reading if distributed in print (or ebook).
Proper celebrations will be in order once the bottom of this page has been reached and the post number reaches 2K. Heck, I might even tell you guys about the original legend of the Five Sisters, the way it has been told since generations among the locals... It's a real legend, not at all made up. Mostly not.

A very old program that's been around since the dawn of keyboards called PRT-SCR.
The logo was pilfered from the web and altered in Photoshop with an alpha channel.
The professionalism comes from me touching a key and clicking a mouse.

Greetings from the 3rd sister. This one is a tad bashful and hides in a bit of a cranny. A bit of grass still missing from the mix, but the rocks are proving very handy. 12th green, 481K tris.
Tree models: Fatbastard Pine, Fugly Long Pine, Toilet Brush Pine, Cringebush, Croakbush, Crudbush.
Gotta say I do like the effect of the Raised Fringes more and more.

I now understand why the 5 Sisters has waterfalls, it's the tears from all the course objects who's feelings got hurt after they realized what their names meant.
I like the Raised Fringes as well. Bring on the tris ... our pc's can handle all the insults.

The low tri count for the scene above is due to the fact that this hole is located at the outside edge of the course and the camera is looking from the inside out. There's nothing to render beyond those cliffs.
And objects have no feelings. Ask my stinkshrub or my wankweed (still in production).

Ahh, The middle sister syndrome, Whereas the older siblings
get the awards, the younger gets the love, and the
middle gets nothing. Once grown they become the most
independent, most secure, and most sought after
by the others. You Go Middle Sister!!

Sweet looking pic K11. Have to agree the transitions from fairway to fringe to rough look sweet.

Well, about that... Here's a short video of my daily test session.
I'm at a stage where I now have daily iteration cycles:
- Design and add stuff in the morning (today: all rocks) and eliminate issues observed during my last test round.
- Make a build.
- Test-play the build, note all incongruities and areas of dissatisfaction.
- Rinse and repeat tomorrow.
This video will show you the 9th, 10th and 11th shown above (and wrongly numbered as 12th previously), and also, at the very end, an interesting fringe-ball interaction. May the Middle Sister help you find your centre.

Here is an idea for one more water feature on 5 Sisters. Perhaps you could design a whirlpool in one of the river areas that would enable (at least in the imagination of a crabby or grouchy golfer) the disposal of vegetation like crudbush and toilet brush pine.

Very nice K, without those fringes that last
shot may have taken a plunge.

I loved that little chuckle right at the end when the ball nestled off the fringe, lol.
Course looking as evil as its creator sounded in the clip, lol.

Initial planting is done. Finally got water hazards figured out. Need to make more 3D objects since the course is surrounded by houses. Need to figure out how to make cart paths since there are many. But the course plays and looks very close to the real thing.

Love the stone texture in the pic above K11. Been trying to learn how to create normal maps with Gimp but so far it is kicking my behind.
Sweet pic Tim, even without the stuff you mentioned.

K - love the work on the fringes. Looking forward to playing the course and the setting. Out of curiosity in regards to the fringes, do you have any idea on their impact on tris?
#1999
Posted 11 February 2016 - 12:56 PM
They're not helping, for sure. They generate additional tris, two of them for each spline control point. But in the big scheme of things, it's an affordable amount, I'd say, 20K at most I would guesstimate.
