Daz wins! You've played this game before, haven't you?

You won a free round at Willow Heath followed by tea and sandwiches in the clubhouse with Tara King (or kidney pie and tequila with Frida K., whichever you prefer)

Highfade, I hear you about the grass. Problem is that it mostly looks good from most angles now, and sometimes does not from certaint angles. Imo its' impossible to get the grass to always look good from all angles. Add to the above static picture the element of camera motions, in which grass in the 250 meters range pops into view, and you sooner or later will have to compromise a little with the colors… and camouflage colors work best.

I will refine the grass textures a bit more anyway, making them less primitive, adding leafs and thorns and slimming down the blades. The current models were made to discover the different shapes and sizes of different grasses that would go together well enough to create a volume effect. I will certainly try and make the light green tips (the sheen part) a bit more yellow. What is important is that the grass textures have a slim base, just one stem touching the ground, and that they then widen out to the top, and that at least the lower half matches the ground texture.

All this design work looks great and I appreciate all your efforts, but I am puzzled. What is the point of all this hard work if we do not get a decent game to play?

Funny thing, I'm more looking forward to the game so we can see what's going to kill framerates rather than actually playing.

It's a fun hobby for me. And a game: Golf is mostly played between your ears. I'm playing it between mine right now - and winning.

The 4th hole par 4. This one really took some time to get the shapes and layer setting right, it does look like CF isn't an exact science. These pics show the 4th and the par 5, 5th before I accidentally wiped all my grasses.

Lovely. It has an eerie, almost whimsical feel to it. Like it. Are these my stones?

In the last of your pictures, the one with the jetpack green, the bottom of the surrounding bunker looks dead flat from above. Perhaps just a tiny smidgen of additional unevenness or let the outside bunker walls slope down less steeply?

Those might be your stones :)

I can smooth the bunker wall a bit but can't really go lower or I'll hit water.

Great day, today. I finished planting the grass. Finally!

Now to deliver the proof. And since everybody else uses "fog", I simply must follow suit.

They are indeed producing some quality golfing environments (far ahead of what TGC can achieve in their designer at present).

@K11.

In your 1st pic above, the blend between fairway and 1st cut seems to be very prominent, a pale stripe. Was this intentional or just a glitch with the screengrab?

;)

Thanks guys,

Well spotted, Daz, you old willow-spotter, you. I only noticed this yesterday from the screen capture, actually. (In the heat of the battle these things tend to get overlooked). Technically, it's not the 1st cut, it's the fairway fringe. 1st cut/semi is the next texture outside.

I can't explain why this has happened exactly. But I most definitely will investigate. The texture is not too bright imo, something else must have cause this. Perhaps the shader….?  On it.

And so I went and looked into the shiny ribbon correctly observed by Daz. The culprit is the fairway fringe which seems to become shiny and light up like a neon light when the light source is being lowered.

In classic K11 fashion, I dealt with the issue by getting rid of the problem itself: I de-fringed my fairway and it now blends straight into the 1st cut, without any fringe in the middle. Less is more.

whdefringe_zps9d6b2212.jpg

Oh, and here is another gimcrack fog beauty. Understand that these pictures look better in here because they are reduced in size. And because I fiddled with the lights and the view angle.

Amazing stuff.  Really worries me that I won't be able to understand how anything works when CF goes public.

Unworry yourself, sully. CF is easy and quick to learn - to design all you see furhter above, it takes up no more than 15% of my work time.

The big rest, and that part that could actually worry you a bit, is the remaining 85%: Unity3D.

If you come to grips with Unity (a process you can start now, free of charge), the Forge will be very anticlimactic. In a good way.
