Yes Unity as a whole can be quite complex because you can do so much with it but from what I can gather through all the cryptic messages about CF is that you can pretty much survive on only knowing how to create your terrain and then shape it etc. Possibly slightly simplistic but things like importing 3d objects are pretty much drag and drop, building trees is a black art but there are trees you can simply just use out of the box. Even water you can just drag your circle of water in and place it over the hole you have and its done.
Painting the terrain is not needed where your course is going to be as CF splines sit on top of your terrain, you only need to paint the non-CF bits as far as I can see. Even trying to mess about with splat-maps is a big no-no and not required apparently.
Lighting, skyboxes, etc - all pretty much out of the box functionality
Grasses - well lets build the field before we start planting seeds!
I seem to spend most of my time now getting my terrains in as good a resolution as possible in preparation for CF, with the limitation of being square and 2049 by 2049 in size.
I could write a big long list of questions about terrains for CF but I'd only get frustrated!

Particle effects, nice!
A bit off the beaten course design track, but water instead of fire textures might be useful to build a water fountain and/or a waterfall.

You're right K, fire and golf do not mix.
No fire hazard on the course, just water, sand,
and a stray kitten or two.

I seriously contemplated, some while ago, to do a series of golf courses on real world locations that are specifically known for not being suitable for golf courses. One of them was the gaping crater of Mount St. Helens, including lava streams and spouting fire pits...
Other courses were located in Antarctica, in undercround caves, on top of a huge mesa in the Valley of Death, in fantasy renditions of Heaven and Hell, and the last one in Valle Marineris, on Mars. Why not? This would be about the first software that would actually let us go for stuff like this - strikes me at least as more interesting as the umpteenth rendering of always the same PGA courses we've played in computer games for decades already. I'm so done with Sawgrass, Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines and even St. Andrews - been there, done that.
I did abandon this vision, though, since the tragic thing these localities have in common is: a distinct dearth of freshly supplied kittens.

Now that you have a full time kitten supplier
I see no reason to abandon your fantasy golf designs.
Although in retrospect, I would imagine that Mars
would have numerous POT BUNKERS, and shipping
kittens into space may not be a feasible venture.
Oh wait, I know...

Good one, NoPutt.
A single file is enough if you intend to tile it seamlessly, no need to make 6.
The square nature of your skybox is still quite evident when you rotate your view. To give your clouds a bit more of a spherical look, here's a little trick:
In Photoshop, with your cloud image open
In the single image, this will look weird, but skybox this image and you will find that the cloud dome feels a lot less cubic and more spherical.

Thanks K, I haven't made a seamless texture yet, but will.
This was just to show the procedure for getting to the
Skybox as it isn't like Unity past. And yes, without some warping
and transforming it does look very boxy and constrained.
Thanks again for the little trick, I'll use it right away.

My version of Photoshop is 7, and it doesn't seem to
have a warp feature as I'm sure CS has. However it does
have a pinch and sphere which I tried after I attempted
to create a seamless sky texture. It looked ok in parts as you will see.
I assume the visible lines are my inept attempt to blend properly?
The texture does seem to have more depth with the sphere filter,
but could just be my imagination. I'll keep my head in the clouds
for a bit longer and hopefully find that #9.

Sorry about that - warp features were introduced with CS2, I just found out. Sorry for sporting a slightly more recent version of PS and assuming everybody else does, too.
Pinch and sphere distortions are no good, because they only affect a round space in the center of your texture and don't extend all the way to the edges. You can try Liquify. Or post your cloud image here (via imgur), then I can quickly warp it for you.

It is seamless, I checked. There you go, freshly warped with -40 bend factor.

Why does my version of Unity have an Off-white
theme, when most I see on here have a
Black or dark grey like this forum? Have I
missed a Unity Theme somewhere?
