No doubt in my mind that I will wait a few months and read many, many reviews before even thinking of purchasing this game.   We've all been burned by a EA product in one form or another.    Graphics look really good, but don't let that fool you...  that's how they rope you in, time after time.

Looks fantastic but unfortunately without a course creator it's Rory all over again. That course creator is essential and EA makes their money on selling courses not giving the customer the ability to make their own. Thank but no thanks as over a period of time playing the same 20 something courses doesn't do it for me. Again it looks nice but not for me.

I Totally!!! agree. When EA hijacked the CA in TW07, I don't buy EA anything.

I remember in the 90's before the age of the course creator where you could by the CD with five courses on it and you looked forward to buying it but in the age of the course creator that ship has sailed and without it the game is dead.  In playing 2k23 now I play a different course every night and can't imagine going back to 20 courses.  EA will never release a course creator as its not their model and my guess is this game will be released it will look fantastic and probably play pretty well but in the end lack of course will kill it.  The big problem they have is not 9nly that but who is on the cover?  EA didnt sell that game Tiger did and he isn't there now so that could kill sales.  I love golf games and buy them all and will buy their new game but not till its at least half price and even then might wait for lower price as I will surely be curious.

For a huge chunk of folks, "looking fantastic and playing pretty well" is more than enough.

I know we've covered this before, but plenty of us out there are just fine with 20-40 courses via DLC (like done in TW14)

No course creator will in no way "kill it"

Thee absence of a CA definitely rules out my further purchase of any future golf platform that might be surfacing in the near future. This is the reason. I hate online tournament golf for a number of reasons, therefore if I am unable to create my own tournaments, tours and players the game has nothing to offer me as a player. To make my point, I have the PGA 2K21 game which has hundreds of great custom course designs at ones disposal. The trouble is that you can only play them and not create your own tournament setups using them. This platform offers two tours which you can participate in, The Korn Ferry Tour as well as the PGA Tour. In the PGA Season you are offered I believe 33 or 35 Tourneys to participate in. Here comes the joke. Only a handfull of courses are actually courses that the Pros play on the regular Tour. The remainder are either fictitious or were never tour material. The real shock was the The Masters Tournament is nowhere to be found on their tour schedule. For that matter, there is no US Open, PGA, or British Open available. So you have two half baked tours with courses that are not interchangeable with hundreds of custom courses and the same handful of Tour Pros which the platform and the game graciously provide for you. Is the recently 2K23 platform any better? Let me just say that I would not clutter up my hardrive with this mess if it was a free download.

It won’t kill it for me but a course creator will give a game longevity. I’m guessing that EA don’t want game longevity, they would rather you bought a new game year on year and sell you new courses. I for one probably wouldn’t buy the EA game because I enjoy making my own courses. I play PGA Tour 2K21 but rarely play courses that come with the game, preferring to play my own (unpublished) efforts.
I play the racing sim Assetto Corsa, which was released in 2014, I believe. The game is still going strong in 2022, due to user created content and looks fantastic due to new graphics enhancements made by the community.

100% completely fair.

I would just posit that you’re probably not in the majority of the mainstream market with that perspective

Probably right

There’s a lot of people that are just fine with that because they’d rather have a game and courses that are updated as platforms evolve.

2K’s golf game, for instance, is now being held back visually and performance wise on the latest platforms due to its legacy. It needs a complete overhaul now, ground up, to compete moving forward.

We had the perfect golf Sim in PG but the promised career mode and customization never happened once outside interests took over. To me that was a shame as it could have been perfect but now we will never know. I play 2K23 and is it perfect no but at least it has a career tho not perfect without Majors and ability to customize but still keeps me playing. I play two rounds a night with one being a society event and one a career round where all event set to four rounds and also I play some practice rounds. Are the graphics as good as EA Rory or the new game no they are not but playing the same courses all the time would be over for me in a month so I accept lower graphics for more quantity. It's all what your looking for and some people good with fewer courses and thats good and some want more and thats good also. Maybe what we all should do is be thankful that we have choices and to me that makes all our choices right.

Hopefully the 2k game sticks around for you Greens

Sure sounds like it's been underwhelming on sales and one wonders what their commitment to it will be once EA game comes out (depends what that looks like of course)

Agree about PG

Such a shame it wasn't continued on and/or had interest from Trackman anymore

Actually sales worldwide have been very good and TGC Tours alone has thousands of players.  Sales not really an issue for the game.  I think EA will have a problem as they will not sell as many copies as 2K simply because of course creator will not be there and in today's market that kills a golf game.  I hope EA game des well and if it eventually goes on sale half price I will buy it as I buy all golf games but most who play 2K23 won't as the amount of societies and TGC Tours are a bigger sell.  Heck last week I think The Beer League had over a thousand entrants and TGC has a a ton of other leagues and you can only play in one.  It really will be uphill for EA especially since they will want a yearly game where 2K goes at least two years and keeps giving free content.  Just my 2 cents.

I based that sales comment on discussions from fans of 2k23 over at Operation Sports, fyi

Wasn't me talking a shot or anything at all -- I have no idea (I'm sure none of us do beyond 2k's offices)

Your enthusiasm for the game is quite a bit higher than many folks there, most of whom are big fans of 2k21

I have no real opinion, as I don't care for HB golf games

I really wish 2k wouldn't have bought them

After reading through the forum that Buck posted I wouldn't touch that HB game with a broomstick putter.

Who is in charge at HB? How can they get it so wrong after all this time and all that money?

It's funny. I often watch or read stuff about 'best golf games of all time' and often PG never gets a mention.  Imagine if PP had put some effort into promotion and they hadn't scarpered. The beauty of PG was the simplicity - no bullshit - and there was ongoing development in the early days. We wouldn't even be talking about other games if development had continued.

Lotta' theories on what the issues are.

One consensus seems to be that maybe HB has reached the ceiling of their development shop skill on this title.

There seem to be a lot of lingering things and little wrinkles and niggles that never really get fully fixed, despite many games released now on the same general game all the way back to TGC 1/2.  Lots of scoreboard and online issues and consistency problems with swing tempo, etc, all seem to persist and vary (that thread highlights a lot of it)

In terms of 2k21 and 2k23

The 2k CEO was pretty open about how blown away and surprised they were by the 2k21 sales.

A lof of things came together there.  The pandemic, with more people at home and 2k21 being the only somewhat new golf game on the market, right at the forefront.

I was curious if they'd roll that excitement about sales and potential into an amazing 2k23 release, especially with signing up Tiger ... and it didn't seem to happen.

I wonder if maybe Tigers injury, plus the pandemic as well as next gen consoles being so constrained for so long maybe all combined to have them put out a somewhat meager 2k23 effort (mostly a touched up 2k21) and delay going for a big all new ground up effort?

One interesting thing to think about -- what if EA hadn't pushed PGA 2022 ... to PGA 2023?

If this retouched 2k21 game (called 2k23) were released against a great EA release already out for a few months from this last Spring, it might have been a real disaster.

I guess this will give 2k/HB a chance to see what EA does now before starting up in earnest on 2k25 .. assuming there is going to be one

2K21 was pretty good but to be honest I prefer the options of 2K23.  First off you have to build your player thru fittings and most have who just want to tee it up have no idea how to fit their clubs and in turn have major issues with tempo and the transition and in turn struggle.  If you dig deep into the game and understand the golf swing you know how to set your clubs up and that is no different than PGA golf as thats what they do.  For some it's to complicated and I get that but for myself and others it's rewarding and to be honest enjoyable.  Also you can play consumable balls vs the default which is no different than real golf as ProV1 is going to spin more than a Bridgestone E6 and you have to know the conditions and the ball type you need.  The catch is that the Virtual Cash is can no longer be used for shoes and shirts as you need your VC for fittings and balls and most players who fit their clubs and balls are cash poor as a dozen of semi spin balls cost 320 VC a dozen and one fitting for let's say seven  irons could cost 150 vc per club.  Trust me the people complaining the game is broke are the ones who haven't figured out you can't succeed at the game unless you understand how the swing works and how to set your clubs up.  If PG had the swing setup and all of the above it would have been the greatest game ever.  In closing if you buy 2K23 and play it as it comes and don't work to create your player you will suck and be the one complaining that the game suck when it doesnt.

There are many people who bought PGA 2K21 and 2K23 who don’t have any interest in course creation but who have benefited greatly from those who do. Some of the user created courses for 2K21 are absolutely fantastic and far better that the ones offered by the developers.
I don’t envisage EA releasing their game with a course creator but I feel that would be very short sighted of them. It would certainly boost sales of the game and, as I mentioned before, give the game longevity, without the need for yearly releases/updates.

The courses created by the community would certainly attract new buyers of the game going forward.

However, at the same time, that course creator, and how it works, has been blamed for things like "no pot bunkers" and also holding back a major graphical overhaul from even happening.

I'm hopeful that, if there is a 2k25, they will do the hard work to rebuild all of it on a fully overhauled and next-gen graphical engine (including the course creator)

Ah, that's just nitpicking...  my brother has the game and let me tell you, the courses, grass, trees AND bunkers look just fine..  of course some courses look better than others, but the designers who really put time and effort into creating a course from scratch, I don't think, at least in my eyes, you can get better looking courses in any game at this time...  I love wonderful graphics, I really do.. but I am not going to sit there with a fine-toothed comb looking at every angle, pixel, placement of grass, etc. to criticize every little detail of someone's custom course.

Yes, in a few months!  I agree... I am looking forward to EA's game..  but of course, there is hesitation on my part from buying it on release..   I will definitely take my time with my decision for this one, just because it is EA!

Oh I not fighting all, just discussing... and yes, on a dead forum.
