A note about 3rd party controllers/officially licensed
There are many officially licensed controllers for both the PS4 and XB1. Officially licensed is another term for 3rd party controller. Most of these controllers are not built with the same quality/sensitivity as the PS4 or XB1 official controller. An officially licensed or 3rd party controller may look like a regular controller but may not pass our Fair Play metrics analysis. Please be aware of this when claiming your controller is an Official XB1 or PS4 controller - it may not be.
Also, please note we have yet to see a controller manufactured by Power A, Hori, or Logitech pass our Fair Play metrics. If your controller is manufactured by either of these manufacturers, it is highly unlikely that your scores will be accepted. These are not the only third-party controllers that do not pass, but are some of the more popular ones. If you're using another brand, it likely won't pass either.

So what you are saying is that we should buy the game for £50 and then spend anything upwards of another £25/30 for a 'official' controller?
Makes the game very expensive IMO.

You don't have to buy an official stick controller but your won't be able to compete at TGC Tours if you don't. You can still play in career mode or other society's but it won't be realistic. I play with a legit one on PGLS and will not win events but I get a good experience but I will say this if I use a Logitech or Speedlink I can shoot 59 Everytime in PG but with what I use I am feeling good with a 69. It's what you are looking for a true test or a robatic controller and I choose the true test and I really believe most want that. The truth is gaming is not cheap anymore and no matter what the format you use you have to lay down more cash than before to play.

You don't have to buy any controller, you can just use a mouse.

Previous comments seem to suggest there is no mouse support in this game. I hope there is.

From TGC Tours Rules:
You may only use a mouse if you can make that mouse operate with the same difficulty that one would face when using an XB1 controller. This often means increasing the mouse sensitivity via DPI settings to facilitate a longer hand movement to create the swing
I guess this was for TGC19, hopefully it will apply to the new game .

I will be very interested to see how you get on with the game Daz. I’m looking forward to seeing how you do playing partial shorts, which I play a lot in PG.
The game looks far better than before, but, for some strange reason, I still prefer the look of PG.
I’ll wait to see what you think of the game before I (and my son) commit to buying it.
I'll sure try and give some feedback bud. It will be honest, as being a 3 Clicker for 99.9% of my virtual golfing career, the controller swing is certainly something I have no bias towards. It will be from the PS4 but I expect it will play just like it does on PC.
The pre-order downloaded today, just got to wait for the countdown clock to hit the unlock.
I'm sure the new on screen meter will help me get started, but the option is always there for more experienced players to turn it off. Personally I think it is a great addition, along with the swing calibration, so hopefully we can all use our own individual swings in the game and not all have to adjust to one swing speed.
I would still agree that PG wins on the looks, but I expect some top quality creations being put out with the new designer.

Looking forward to your review Daz. I think eventually you will prefer the controller swing. PG has the best controller swing I’ve used so they have a lot to live up to.
If, and it’s a big if, I bought the game it would be on PS4 so it will be good to see how you get on with the PS4 controller.
Strange, but a few years ago I actually posted on their forum, suggesting that they have a swing calibration system, as I hated the tempo swing, arguing that all real golfers have differing tempos.

xbox 360 official pad is 100% the most difficult pad to use, its super sensitive, they really don't make pads like this anymore, its weighty and feels like quality. This is not to say that its superior to the XB1, just more sensitive. See below where i explain the axis of both and what i used to test.
xbox one official - compared to the 360 it feels cheap and light, what amazed me with the xbox one pad was how much easier tour pro was on PG and TGC compared to the 360, the degrees of dispersion were much easier to control.
I had spent many hours with the 360 pad on the range hitting ball after ball trying to limit the degrees off plane to try and get good, eventually i got it down to a good level. As soon as i picked up a XB1 pad i was near enough striping them without too much thought, i was shocked by the difference, this was also true with TGC 2019, the 360 was much more difficult when controlling dispersion.
I no longer have a XB1 controller because i sold the box it came with, so out of interest i managed to pinch my daughter's XB1 pad to perform another test on PG at tour pro, here is the result...
bear in mind i don't really play PG anymore so it took about 40 mins for me to get back into hitting acceptable shots on the range..
Xbox 360 XB1
shot 1 - 3 off plane shot 1 - 1 off plane
shot 2 - 2 off plane shot 2 - 1 off plane
shot 3 - 2 off plane shot 3 - 1 off plane
shot 4 - 3 off plane shot 4 - 2 off plane
shot 5 - 1 off plane shot 5 - 1 off plane
shot 6 - 1 off plane shot 6 - on plane
shot 7 - 5 off plane ( ouch ) shot 7 - 2 off plane
shot 8 - 2 off plane shot 8 - 3 off plane ( knew i hit a poor one, with 360 it would have been 10+ off plane )
shot 9 - 2 off plane shot 9 - on plane
shot 10 - 1 off plane shot 10 - 1 off plane
When you look at the two you get the impression that its not that big a difference, but in game its huge! a 2 off plane approach shot with a 5 iron will most likely leave you on the fringes or off the green, a 1 off plane will give you a decent putt chance. notice i hit 2 on plane shots with the XB1 pad in ten shots, with the 360 i can go multiple rounds before i hit 1 on plane.
Now don't take my word for it, if you have access to both pads then try it for yourself, i have two 360 pads, one is worn to death and playing tour pro with it is now a nightmare, so difficult to hit anything close to on plane. The other 360 which is the one i now use in great condition, it has hardly been used and has been sat in my drawer for prob 8 years. My Daughter's XB1 pad has been hammered, she plays fortnite constantly and the pad is about 4 years old, its well worn yet it still plays an easier round on PG and TGC.
A word about the axis on 360 pad and XB1
The XB1 axis is better / smoother than the 360 and i will explain why, to know this i used F1 2020 as my guide and turn 3 at cataluyna ( Spanish GP ) turn 3 is a long sweeping right hander where you have to gradually move the stick of the controller slightly to the right for roughly 4 secs while you transition the corner. With the 360 pad it was very hard to achieve smoothly because the initial stick travel is very sensitive, with the XB1 it was easier and smoother to make the initial stick travel and hold it for the duration of the corner. This tells me that the initial travel of the XB1 stick is more forgiving than the 360 and when you translate this into PG and TGC you then see why the XB1 plays easier than the 360.
My advice - Get yourself an XB1 controller with bluetooth dongle if you want to compete on either PG or PGA 2k21 / 2019, its gonna cost you more than the game itself and not worth it imo, but it's the only way to go if you want to compete on tours. I don't bother playing tours anymore so i'm quite happy to accept the challenge my 360 brings in casual single and MP rounds.
Power A controller - straight shooter
Any speed link or thrustmaster - straight shooter
Hori - straight shooter ( there may be better quality versions that play fair )
steam controller - Worst controller ever lol just awful ( straight shooter )

I’ve used both the PS4 and Xbox 360 controllers on PG but can find no real difference in sensitivity.

Think the IGN reviewer was playing on Amateur going by the swing plane meter in his gameplay video and not Pro-Am as he claimed.
Pic below compares the 6 swing level stock difficulty meters taken from Early1981's gameplay at Pro-Am on YouTube. These are all individually customisable as required.Stock Beginner has no swing timing enabled (though it can be toggled on), so it is hitting everything with a perfect tempo.
A few of the 'early beta' reviews have all added that Pro in 2K21 plays at a similar difficulty to Master in TGC2019 PGA and that Master and Legend swings in the new game are then a step up from the old game.

My finger has been hovering over the ‘buy’ button on my game supplier‘s website but I think I’ll wait for your review Daz. No pressure!!
I’ve been burned too many times with this game!
If they could guarantee that the controller swing was as good as the one on PG and partial shots were viable, I would forget about those horrible bunker lips and buy it now!

Oh god, never ever take anything from an IGN review. I will review it tomorrow when it drops, i know what im looking for to differentiate it from 2019, short game mostly, i have always hated how clunky and devoid of feel it has always been with TGC around the greens. That tempo also looks like a lottery wen you make the jump to master or legend, not one early player has spoken about why they go from a fast to a slow in the space of a shot. they seem clueless as to why it happens, i don't wanna be playing a game of chance, that's just artificial difficulty, at least tour pro on PG is 100% based on good practice even if it is a bit one dimensional.

I was told by a well known YouTuber, to play a partial shot you need to move the shot aiming reticule and then play the shot with a slower tempo! I wouldn’t want to use the shot aiming reticule, so I asked how to play a partial shot without it! I didn’t get a reply, which is a little worrying.

Having the swing power tied to where the aiming reticule is placed is a poor mechanic IMO. Feels too gamey and adds unnecessary steps to the swing process.
I hate seeing on videos where someone zooms back and forth multiple times while changing their aim to get the distance just right.
I'm not that familiar with the series, is there a BLI option for green reading?

I agree. I have only found one video on YouTube where the player has turned all the assists off. I don’t know how he played partial shots.
All that nonsense with the reticule is annoying and not good for game immersion.

I'm pretty excited about that video Ian. The greens are VERY readable without the grid. There are no excuses for having the grid are there?
Well?
