I'm pretty sure that there will not be a seriously committed panel of jurors going through each entry with methodical diligence and wide open minds.

It'll be more like a pasty middle-aged Trackman dude called Chuck, dipping a toe into each for a few minutes and handing out A's or F's depending on the levels of his stomach acid after a helping of three hot fudge sundae pop-tarts washed down with four cups of tepid decaf. Any pot bunkers lies after a dodgy shot - and Chuck will rage-quit.

@shanker01: I'm sure you did not want to cause any harm with your comment. But I did, some educational harm, at least, by taking it a bit further. The real vs fictional factions have been at it forever and you had to pick a side in what is a truly sectarian conflict (One resoundingly won by the realists now that Trackman is wearing the big daddy pants around here and the sim folk are lording it over us lowly PC players). I felt I needed to strike that particular chord just to spice up proceedings a bit. I apologise to you for turning your honest opinion into a launch pad for more fundamental issues. But it had to be done, t'was worth at least 40 posts in the currently by far most interesting thread on this Forum.

Pot bunkers are not even friendly for a 41 year old sim player sometimes :)

I've hit 5 shots in one instance before I got out of one on muirfield I believe.. instead of being smart and playing it backward I kept trying and trying and failing to hit one high enough to clear the wall in front of me.

Just an extra voice of "easy on the pot bunkers" please.

I don't mind some of them, especially if strategically placed, but too much and it just makes me have no fun and not want to play the course again - which is no good for me or the designer or the game, etc.

Just wondering, will these 18 hole courses of par 3's  be offered to JNPG after they have selected the winner of their competition????

In real life, I had the fortune of playing Turnberry Ailsa this year. On hole 6, I hit a poor PW into a pot on the left side of the hole. Took me 3 to get out and I took a 6. Had to splash out sideways on one on 11 and made bogey. Played the par 3s to 5 over mainly because of bad swings but even the rest of the course. I was happy with my 76 and thought that's about what I deserved for my bad swings.

I have mostly toned down pots (less than 3 foot lips) just because I think they look nice on my course.

I'm thinking on your quest for realism, Buck, a bad score from a bad shot sounds pretty real to me. I think a few guys probably should've won the Open had it not been for that road hole bunker at St Andrews.

eh - maybe - I see your point.

That said..

There's so much flawed with digital golf vs real golf and what relates to what with scoring and shot outcomes, etc..

I'm just trying to enjoy myself at this point.

In that light...god damned does this game have a plugged ball flaw/problem.

I've never seen such ludicrous ball plugging nonsense, including ones that are from in the trap... go a few more feet and get plugged --- again!?

wtf?  It was physically impossible...

This is the most frustrating part of PG right now for me...PG1 is dead for updates, but PG2 may never come (or may be years away, etc) and in the meantime there are all sorts of little niggles and issues in PG1 that are frustrating as hell.

Regarding pots...just play the damn ball backwards and out safe if you have to, if you have to give up a shot then so be it, after all,  its where links courses get their bite, why would you dumb them down to be no more penal than an ordinary bunker.

So why not let the sim playing community vote for the cours(es) they like best without knowing the designers' identities. Bit late now of copurse with all the screenies.

My hyperbole about pop-tart Chuck is mere speculation. I may be wrong (I'm rarely wrong, almost never). But I may be a tad opinionated about this.

No, I do not think a sim community vote would be practical. That would mean, ideally, that everybody taking part would have to download more than half a dozen of beta courses and play each one repeatedly to reach a fair verdict. That's a lot of work - we all know that is not going to happen. It would take a lot of time, could never be a transparent process and it would open the door for politics and partisanship.

A little caveat: The two words "Trackman" and "community" are fundamentally opposed. Trackman does not do community nor are they community-driven in any way. They are soulless corporate money worshippers who will all burn in hell, deservedly so. I can write this because I' m pretty sure that acid-reflux Chuck does not waste his time around here. And that reveals another narrative arc currently in play: The cold corporate culture of them clashing with the ancient ways of the golf game community that thrives on voluntary contributions and free-of-charge non-profit work. Myself, I found the offer of cash rewards for this competition rather telling: Money people thinking they have to buy something that has been offered for free in the past. I did not sign up because of the dough - and am pretty sure most other designers didn't either.

Ever read a post from a Trackman person around here saying: "Hi, we're the new owners, my name is Suchandsuch, we are considering this community to be a valuable asset for our products and looking forward to working closely with all of you." Well, have you? I haven't. Draw your own conclusions, mine would be that they don't give a shit.

I will try to post a video of the Rattler later today.

While I don't agree with everything you say, (I rarely do), I do find

your musings hilarious and interesting.

I hope you win and Pop-Tart Chuck then owns your course

and fills it with shallow bunkers, Speedtrees and animated Kittens.

K11 is quite correct, we would all design in this competition without the lure of reward, that really is secondary to just doing something we enjoy.  The pref is for 18 holes, so i have kinda handicapped myself by only turning out 9.  I don't expect to win anything, i just quite liked the idea of throwing together 9 creative holes, i hope i have achieved that, and achieved it by someone playing it and being able to tell that it was made by DoGgs without even knowing.  You could play a K11 course and instantly know that he created it, its a distinction that sits real nice over the paint by numbers real life map courses that can look quite similar to one another.  I guess i'm lucky as i like to work with maps as well as create my own, whilst others are strictly fictional or map, either way we all contribute for love, not money.

Still to do:

- A less empty skybox.

- A more canyon-y cubemap for the water reflection.

- M'okay... make the pot bunker at 1:20 a bit shallower... (you wusses!)

- Sound loops

- Trees and shrubs - sparsely planted.

Thank you and good night.

Nice work D, who doesn't like ancient ruins, and dinosaurs.

I kept waiting for Indiana Jones to come running out with a boulder behind him.

And yes, I do agree that the mere fun of designing outweighs the monetary gain,

whatever the price.

I’m all for people to have some optional ancient ruins and dinosaurs and space courses and weird colors, etc

I just hope nobody in favor of those options was doing too much making fun of EA for having battleships on courses.

Right?

Buck, you are talking about courses that directly affect how you play when you mention the E.A offerings.  My course may well have a theme, but each hole plays no different to any regulation course around the world.  Plus these are fun par 3 courses, i certainly do not take them serious, its a chance to just show a bit of imagination with CF and break from what we all do 99.9% of the time, if some want to stick to realistic looks and feels then so be it, for the rest of us its a chance to run a bit wild and get creative.  E.A made a massive deal with their game trailer when it came to the battle ship course, what they should have done is just focused on the traditional game in a sporting sense and left the fantasy stuff to be discovered by the masses. few!
